Intel Corporation Display Software Update Released August 2010

I just downloaded and installed, or my machine did, the Intel Corporation Display Software Update, Released August 2010 and uninstalled shortly afterward because it screwed up my "display".
What it did was change my resolution from 1280 x 800 to 1024 x 768! It also changed what shows up in my taskbar…it removed the sound icon and also my network icon…that pissed me off quite a bit…what pissed me off even more was when I went to add the sound and network icons back to the taskbar, I couldn’t because it was grayed out…and when I went to change my resolution back it made it so I could choose the resolution they chose for me, or 1280 x 768, all the other options were not available!
I immediately did a search on how to uninstall Windows Updates because I didn’t know how. I found a site that showed how, but, the Intel update did not show in the recent updates list!! This tells me a couple things, that the update is crap, they know it, but need it to gather information, or the update is crap and they don’t care…either way, it doesn’t seem to be necessary, in fact I would say it’s quite useless…here’s how I got rid of it, but let me preface this by saying the easiest way, is to do a system restore to the point previous to the install…if you delete the install manually first and then do the system restore, the system restore may not work.
I first went to Display Adapters and deleted the stupid thing, but after a reboot, my resolution went back to the damn setting they chose…that’s when I decided a system restore was the easiest way to go about it.
To get to Display Adapters, go to: Control Panel (Classic View) =>> Device Manager =>> Display Adapters =>> Click the Plus sign next to that and you should see Intel Corporation – Display – Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family, right click on that and click Uninstall…reboot.
Now everything works fine and is back to the way it was before the install…while you’re at it, if you haven’t already done it, I would set your Windows Update settings to: “Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them”, that way you’ll avoid this problem in the future. If you’re not comfortable with that, then just set it to the recommended setting.
Good Luck!!
